If you are single, the thought of Valentine’s Day might send shivers up your spine or knots in your stomach. Keep in mind that I said knots, not butterflies. That is why out of spite, humor, or anti-consumerism, Singles Awareness Day was created. Some say it falls on February 14th, some claim the day after, either way it is a chance to celebrate the awesomeness of not being in a relationship. Here are some ideas on how you and your single friends can celebrate followed by how NOT to celebrate.

Scary Movie Night:
If Michael Myers can’t take your mind off Valentine’s Day then who can? Get some friends and rent Halloween, Paranormal Activity, or Carrie and pop some popcorn. You won’t be up all night because of romance, but you may be up all night…with the lights on.

Go Clubbing:
Not bar hopping. I mean clubbing. I’m taking get dressed to the nines, up all night, dance till you drop kind of night. It may end up being an expensive night, but your friends and you deserve to celebrate your freedom.

Spa Treatments:
You don’t need to be part of a couple to enjoy a couple of massages and facials with your friends.

Laser Tag:
Whether you are angry, sad, or glad to be single, laser tag is something that everyone in your group of friends can agree on. It is physical, it is fun, and if you are angry, what better way to get it all out than by pulling a trigger a bunch of times?

Throw a Party:
If there was ever a good excuse to throw a party, it’s now. Invite all the single people you know, get some delicious appetizers together, invent an exciting theme, and don’t forget the cocktails.

What NOT to do on Singles Awareness Day:

Don’t Call Your Ex:
Do I really need to explain why? Desperation, sadness, the list goes on and on. If you need a friend to hold on to your phone, that might be a good idea for the night. There’s a good reason the relationship ended and there’s no reason that Valentine’s Day or Singles Awareness Day canbe a good excuse for a drunk dial…or a sober dial for that reason.

Don’t Gamble:
Going to a casino can be tempting enough, but if you are sad on S.A.D. then chances are you are going to be more vulnerable to spending too much time at the Blackjack table.

Don’t Make a Big Decision:
Sometimes sadness or anxiety can instill in us impulses that would normally pass after a few hours but because of our twisted state of mind may seem like something that will stick. Nope. Take a few days to consider if you are on the verge of a life-changing decision.

All in all, we hope you celebrate your fabulous singleness with friends, family, and lots of fun!
